This is an unfortunate event because of reckless behavior, and is amplified by the fact that an infant was hit by a paintball. All it takes is a few bad seeds to make everything else look bad. The U.S. has over 300 million people, and with a large population the numbers of bad things people do can easily distort that most people live peacefully.
Hopefully this incident does not cause any unnecessary stereotypes, or worse, any crack down on markers via legislation.

No matter what there will always be morons in this world, so it important to set good examples for people to follow in order to keep the moron ratio down.
