So I started tinkering and came up with the idea of lengthening the bottom portion towards the back of the hopper so that it would catch the lever. This works wonderfully! I can now flip the lid, tip the marker forwards fill it up, and snap the lid back down and it closes. Here's pictures of my template: (with extended tip)

question how long do u make the cut in the hopper?
