Re: Polish internals and finish problems?

Aluminium does not rust but it does corrode with time. I have also heard of polishing barrels with aluminium polish but sanding it sound like a bad idea. Infact polishing could improve a barrel by removing minor corrosion. A mate of mine polished his stock 98 custom barrel and got slightly better accuracy from it as a result.

Well if we are worried about rust, let me tell you that all metals rust. In different way and take longer for the corrosion to eat the metal but all metals rust. Aluminum in the way of corrosion, steel gets rusty very fast so so do others either fast or slow but they all rust and corrode which is a type of rust on different metals.

Re: Polish internals and finish problems?

as long as you keep your internals oiled you will not have an problems with it degrading whatsoever! I know your orings will fail 10 times sooner if you DONT polish them, the a5 was the worse, tippmann powder coated a lot of the inside on my gun, and it rubbed the bolt's oring off fast, as soon as I polished it and put a new oring on it shows no signs of wear. especially after like 10 games so far!

Re: Polish internals and finish problems?

Just polish the internals alone, no need to touch the barrel. They come bored when factory machined... touch it, its already smooth.

Re: Polish internals and finish problems?

you will not have any problems with pitting/ corrosion unless you have water on the surface or working between mating parts. also, whoever mentioned the airplane off of florida, that was a problem with fasteners as the corrosive environment had some effect on the tolerances of the fasteners and the structural integrity, not the aluminum body/frame. Oh, and that is salt water too (ocean breeze), salt corrodes EVERYTHING much faster(ask anyone that lives in the midwest what salt does to cars). if your internals are lubricated the way they should be,
you shouldn't have to worry about any problems with corrosion, end of story.

Re: Polish internals and finish problems?

It is actually Impossible for aluminum to rust. Rust refers to the oxidation of Iron and Iron alloys. Aluminum contains no iron elements. Aluminum however does have its own oxidation process the same as all metals do. And it may come as a major shock to some to find that aluminum oxidizes many magnitudes faster than iron, but has the unique property that any aluminum surface exposed to oxygen will oxidize within seconds creating an air tight aluminum-oxide layer preventing further oxidation from forming below the surface.

Re: Polish internals and finish problems?

There were some pits that came up after sanding, but only the airbubbles from the casting process. There was also this odd black buildup of some kind. It didn't really affect performance, but annoying to clean.
