Re: Polishing internals data

I added a second chart to the 98 post. It has a third table so you can see how the velocities compare to each other more easily. *hopefully*

You beat me to it! I was gonna ask if you could either readjust your graphs to the same scales or if you could combine them like that. It makes it easier to compare when everything is proportional. Good job.

I expected the Sav to perform worse than the less viscous lubes as I saw the same thing in my quick test. Why do you think the WD-40 performed differently on the 98 than on the A5? On one, it worked better than the Pure Lube and the other it did worse. I'm only comparing it to the other lubes and not the stock receivers because, like you said, the A5 had the FVA adjusted.

Re: Polishing internals data

I just completed polishing one side of my A5... and am working on the other right now.

When I'm done, I will post some pictures. I won't really have much before and after data, but I will be able to compare it to my dad's a5 which is not polished at all... so I will try and do that this weekend. Pics should be up shortly hopefully

I'm thinking that I didn't put enough Pure Lube or Gun Sav on the A-5's receivers. I put a small glob on it, but after running my fingers over the same glob on the 98, it didn't feel like enough so I added a little more. I'm pretty sure if I had added a little more lube to the A-5 it would have performed better as well.

Now that I have compiled everything I'll have to get my hands on another A-5 to polish so that I could redo everything exactly the same, now that I know what I'm doing.

Re: Polishing internals data

This is interesting. I did some digging and found my old data comparing oil to grease. Here is my data.

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?k...40FPp48ZjtYdRg

They agree with grease giving a lower mean velocity but our standard deviation relationship is different. Mine showed better SD with grease while yours shows it being worse. Perhaps we should start a separate thread for lube testing.

Re: Polishing internals data

For the last 10 years, I've made a career out of selling sandpaper and other abrasives. I won't say who, but I work for the largest abrasives manufacturer in the world. So anything having to do with grinding/sanding/polishing really interests me. I wouldn't consider myself an expert in anything but this field.

I do have some concerns with your polishing process. Proper sanding technique requires that you follow a certain grit sequence. Starting at 600 and finishing with 1500 is not the right way to do this and get the best results. When you start with 600, the abrasive grain is removing metal that is equilavent to the size of 25.8 microns. When you jump all the way to 1500 grit, the abrasive grain is only removing the tops of the valleys that you just made with the 600 grit. 1500 grit is about 12 microns.

So what you've done is create valleys with the 600 grit and then just knock the tops off of them. There still is a valley though and the shine you're seeing is just more surface area for light to reflect. It's not actually polished better. This also allows for air inefficiencies because air can now move under the o-rings. Theoretically, it could add additional wear to your o-rings.

I would suggest to start with 600 grit and never skip more than one grit size. So I would go 600-800-1000-1200-1500. Believe it or not, but your finish might appear duller, but I assure you it's better.

I polished mine this way and my air efficiency increased tremendously along with FPS.

Re: Polishing internals data

So if I were to repolish my receivers, were should I start? Should I start back at 600 and work my way up, or should I go to 800? Or am I screwed?

It seemed to work on the 98 though...

That is rather interesting. I polished my internals working from 400-800-2000. It did seem like quite a jump from 800 to 2000. Are there any grits between 1500 and 2000?

We will definitely need to start testing Lube/Oil next.
