Carbide is on a distinguished road
Internals polish question

So I’ve been an A-5 owner 7 days, I’ve been getting stir crazy with all the snow here so I’m tinkering with my new item.

I decided that I would polish the internals today. As I was doing this I started thinking. What is the point of polishing anything but the green boxes/areas?

If the point of polishing your internals is to improve efficiency do you need to polish anywhere but where moving parts are rubbing against each other?

I would also think that the worries some people have about taking too much material off would only be in the area of the yellow box.

What areas need an air tight seal?

If all this is repeated I apologize.

Carbide

Re: Internals polish question

Carbide, you are definately on the right track!

Basically the idea is to just smooth up the material that is there, and not to remove large amounts of material to make it a mirror finish.

I actually used a polishing compound that is used to polish brass shell casings for hand loading ammunition. It worked quite well. It's almost like rough or gritty toothpaste.

I wrapped the a5 bolt in a very thing gun cleaning patch, and used the bolt as my polisher. By using the bolt (and holding it in the position that it slides back and forth in the marker internals) it will only remove the "high" spots in the internals without removing excess metal. By doing it this way, you won't have to spend a large amount of time polishing things that are not needed.

-------
On to the front bolt....

In the place where the front bolt slides back and forth, I just basically used the same approach, except I just used my finger, since this is a much smaller area.

Also be sure to look for any areas where there are any burs and rub those down a bit to.

OK.. I hope this helps... I just polished mine about 3 days ago.

Good luck polishing!

Re: Internals polish question

by polishing you are decreasing friction in those areas you have outlined in green. so, you're assumption about areas where there are moving parts is correct.

in terms of an airtight seal, as far as i understand it, there is no airtight seal there, but it is possible to take too much material off of the areas you are polishing and create an air leak. i don't know of anyone who has posted overpolishing it. not that they haven't, i just haven't come across it yet. anyway, there is a tutorial on this site on how to do it, you might double check there.

I think i might be the first...

I'm having leak problems only since i polished my internals. I got my R/T to run tonight! so it's not a leak in any of the R/T components. but here's where it gets weird...

I cock the gun. turn the gas on. NO leak.

I fire the trigger and THEN i start to get a leak. it sounds like it's coming from the tombstone/powertube area. if i put my finger down the barrel and cover the bolt it gets quieter, but it doesn't go away. i can't feel anything coming through the bolt, but i can definately hear it. Any ideas??

Re: Internals polish question

There are some bad tombstones out there. I had my local proshop replace mine for free. Might be worth trying.

Re: Internals polish question

Sounds like your washer/o-ring in the valve might not be in place.

They washer is sitting on the "shelf" and the oring is in its groove. i made sure to press it down in there. Maybe is should just take the whole valve apart and start there..

Re: Internals polish question

Zhammy could very well be it. A lower pressure won't create the seal necessary. But it'd have to be quite a bit low.

Also, make sure your o-rings are oiled. Other than that, make sure it's assembled correctly. Check out my vid, if necessary.
