Disassembling problem

I was taking my A5 apart to clean it and lube the internals, and ultimately to polish the internals. Only problem is I've hit a bit of a snag. The small screw underneath the barrel adapter will not budge an inch. It isn't stripped or anything, it just won't budge at all. Anyone else ever had this problem? What should I do?

Yes, I've had that. My first suggestion is to squirt a conservative amount of WD-40 onto the nut and shank of the bolt on the right side, and also on the heado f the bolt on the left side. Leave that on overnight, then see if you can't budge that nasty little bastard.

Second, if you have them - use the metric allen wrench (silver or chrome, usually) that's the closest to the standard one. sometimes the slight difference in size will get you a bite. Of course, you may round out or strip the bolt this way. (I can't believe I just intentionally told someone to use the wrong tool for the job.)

Last, and this is if nothing works, drill that bad boy out.

Re: Disassembling problem

also take the top screw out and the cyclone screw and loosen the others on back and see if you can get the barrel adapter out this may take the stress of the bottom bolt and let it come out easy. be careful it may not come out with the bottom bolt still tight just something to try.

Re: Disassembling problem

I'll try the WD-40.

I had all the screws and field strip pins out with the exception of this one, I'm assuming that this one screw as well as the banjo fitting holds the cyclone in place.

Re: Disassembling problem

Make dang sure you replace that bolt if you get it out, and a good rule of thumb for not over tightening: Put the long end of the allen wrench into the screw, you'll get less leverage so it won't come out as hard.

If the other advice doesn't work you can usually get extractor bits (looks like a screwdriver bit with reverse rifling) at the hardware store, I recomend using them with a screwdriver that will take bits instead of a drill, and connect it up to a vise or some such or it'll spin. This is kind of a crap shoot but it generally works better with allen screws than normal screws but it still may not work.

Re: Disassembling problem

I attempted to try to loosen it with WD-40 to no avail, let it sit in there for a good 5-6 hours before attempting to loosen it. Looks like I'll have to drill the sucker out. This should be an adventure.

Re: Disassembling problem

if it is the bolt not screw(screws hold the grip together) that is on the underside of the barrel forward of the cyclone use a closed ended wrench or something that you can slide over the allen key. Just be careful not to strip the bolt. the problem is it is over tightened. You need more leverage to break it loose. one hand on the wrench or small breaker bar and one holding the allen to ensure it will not strip.

Re: Disassembling problem

also if it is the very front bottom one all you need to do is remove every thing including the cyclone and just add a little heat like a blow dryer or heat gun would more than likely be enough and if it is the cyclone you need to take the bottom cover off then add wd-40 see if it works and go from there drilling is never a good option just the last one
