rebuilding the A5--help with receiver halves

OK, im rebuilding my A5 now, but i was wondering if the receiver halves could be saved in the process. Even before i tried to polish the internals, there was something(im assuming the overspray or whatever) chipping off the inside(i did buy it used). THe chipping started at the rear end of the powertube, and went all the way back. After i tried to polish the internals using brasso and steel wool, also brillo pads and sandpaper, i got some more chipped off, but not as much as had been chipped off already. This also left fairly deep scratches in the metal, which dont look very good at all. I also mostly did all of this to one half. I could fairly easily get new receiver halves, but I dont want to if i dont have to.
THanks everyone.

Re: rebuilding the A5--help with receiver halves

pictures would be helpfull to see what your talking about. On my A-5 after polishing the internals there is a serise of machine marks that are half moon shaped. They looks bad but it is smooth. What grit of sand papper are you using?

Re: rebuilding the A5--help with receiver halves

Yeah man, if all you used was brillo, you really shouldn't have been able to scratch up the halves too bad, but the only way for us to tell would be to take some pics and post em up.

Re: rebuilding the A5--help with receiver halves

If you sand it down with 100-300 grit sandpaper to smooth out the scratches, then followed by 600, 1000, then 2000. Even the the scratches are still visible, as long as it doesnt cut into the o-ring, then you should be alright.

Some say that if you take too much off, the marker will not recock. However if you put the 2 halves together and put in the powertube you will notice a HUGE gap between the receivers for air to bleed from the trigger frame. The only part that needs to be air tight is the seal in the powertube. That is where all the pressure is needed to build up in order to recock the marker.

Re: rebuilding the A5--help with receiver halves

Ok ill post pictures ASAP, were getting a new camera so idk when thatll happen.. im not so much worried about the scratches as i am the chipping of the overspray. Is the chipping normal? My A5 is also the nickel edition, if that helps at all.

Re: rebuilding the A5--help with receiver halves

If its over spray its just paint. And if you are polishing the internals you want that to come off.

Re: rebuilding the A5--help with receiver halves

The scratches are prolly caused by whatever was chipping the paint.. So it's good you took it apart, you just might have saved your marker.. I would also like to see a picture so I can tell what scratching and chipping you're talking about...

Depending on how used the marker is, and how lubed it was while you were using it.. Light chipping/scratching/wear of the paint on the inside of your marker is normal. And is the main reason you want to remove it.. First, The bolts o-rings will drag more on painted surface than a polished metal surface, also the paints surface will wear the o-ring faster than a polished metal surface..

As stated before, sand or brillow all the remaining paint off, and then polish the actual metal.. Most of your light scratches will be gone by then.. But if you have any DEEP scratches in the metal, not just the paint, Something is real wrong....

Re: rebuilding the A5--help with receiver halves

It sounded like he said the sanding/brillo pads were creating the deep scratches.
