nitrogen filled scopes?

What is the big deal with a nitrogen filled scope? does it do any thing better then a normal scope, and is it worth the extra $20? thanks!

Re: nitrogen filled scopes?

I think that (if I remember what I read somewhere) a nitrogen-filled scope is more temperature-stable and helps fight fogging due to humidity/temp changes or variations. Hope that helps.

Re: nitrogen filled scopes?

I don't remember exactly where I read it, but I do remember learning the info during Unit Armorer School when I was in the 82nd ABN DIV. I'll keep looking to see if I can get a link to a site or blurb that can explain it better.

If anyone else finds it before me, please post it up !!

Hope that helps.

Re: nitrogen filled scopes?

I suppose it has something to do with the fact that by filling the scope with Nitrogen, you remove traces of water inside it. Thus preventing condensation on the inside of the lens.

Your right TAG that is exactly what it's for. To help prevent fog.

Re: nitrogen filled scopes?

YOu got it right gents, it is to prevent fogging from tempareture changes caused by humidity inside the housing.

On my ship, we have fancy shmancy cameras on the upper decks that have double lenses cylinders pressurized with nitrogen. Nitrogen is also a cleaner gas so the image distorsion is less. The bodies/casings are charged with an LP air bleed off system to continuously change the air in the casing with dry air.
