The "stock" used to refer to the whole body or frame a firearm houses the internals in, particularly with ye olde long rifles. Since it was all one piece, you could differentiate between sections by calling it the buttstock, the piece behind the action/receiver/lock, and the forestock, the part in front of it. Since you didn't have a vertical grip or handle, the forestock was just the wood under the barrel that served as both a front grip and heat shield. This is also where the phrase "lock, stock, and barrel" came from because it meant you had all the parts necessary to build a gun. I use the term "forestock" to refer to a horizontal foregrip, like that found on the basic A-5A2. Technically it's not a forestock because it's not one piece with the rest of the body or the buttstock, but it looks like one and serves the same function. I just use the terms foregrip and forestock to differentiate between the two styles.
