HOW TO: Mount a Stabilizer behind the Cyclone

Here's your ingredients list:



This next bit threw me off because it wasn't in the original directions on the UMS forum. I had to cannibalize this part from my hubby's remote to make it work, so I'm letting you all know this before you buy the parts so you won't be stuck:



You will also need the following tools:
- Teflon tape (very important!)
- Screwdriver
- Hex keys (wrenches)
- Various sized spanners (wrenches) or a couple of adjustable ones.

The first step is to take your Lapco offset apart and use the new screws to attach the weaver rail. The rail I chose was from Bass Pro Shops, and just happened to have the holes drilled in the perfect places. You may need to drill the holes if your rail doesn't have them in the right location:



Once the offset is put back together, it should look something like this. If you're fussy, you can get black screws or paint the heads, but in reality, the Stabilizer covers them up so you don't really need to:



Here is the offset mounted on the A-5. If you like, you can put some Blue Loctite on the threads just to make sure it doesn't move.



The next thing to do is to mount your Stabilizer to the 1" scope ring:



If your Stabilizer came with a 90* elbow in the bottom like mine did, you'll need to remove it:



Wrap a couple of turns of Teflon tape around one end of the 5" braided line and screw it into the Stabilizer:



Next, take your ASA adapter and screw the 90* elbow into the bottom of it. Teflon tape is required here:



Screw the 45* elbow into the 90* elbow. Don't screw these down too tightly to start off with, as you'll need a little play to turn the elbows in order to get the angles right when you connect the hose.



Mount your Stabilizer to the scope mount:



Screw the braided gas line into the 45* elbow using more Teflon tape. Screw the tombstone into the ASA adapter. Now here comes the tricky bit... you have to bend and twist the gas line until you can get the tombstone to go into the marker. If it helps, remove the Stabilizer from the scope mount and use it to help twist the line. You will need to tighten your fittings here in order to get them at the correct angle. Don't be discouraged if you have a hard time with this... I had to unscrew a couple of my connections and start over before I got it to fit. You should be able to get the gas line to bend so that it doesn't interfere with the trigger or with the manual Cyclone advance.



All done! Now air it up and check for leaks. If you can hear a leak but you're not sure exactly where it's coming from, a few drops of soapy water will help... the soap will bubble wildly as soon as it hits the leak. If you find a leak, disconnect the air and unscrew the offending fixing, add some more Teflon tape and try again.

Just as a side note... I couldn't get my remote adapter to screw all the way into my Stabilizer. I'm not sure why... all the other pics I've seen of them, it seems to screw right in. In the end, I just tightened it up with some pliers (it was leaking when I did it hand tight). Am I right in thinking that I can oil the marker by putting oil in the bottle end of the remote instead of through the Stabilizer?

What does the Stabilizer do?

That was an excellent how to. I have just moved this up on my list of upgrades. I have two questions.
1. Would I still be able to top mount a red dot?
2. Source to purchase the steel line?

I guess you could top mount a red dot if you could figure some other way of getting the weaver rail off to the side, but you woudn't be able to use the exact method in the how-to because the Lapco offset doesn't have a top rail, and it takes up the dovetail where one would normally go. I bet Flatline's Up at the Underground Mod Shop could make you something that would let you do both though.

If you do a search on "Stabilizer" you will come up with a whole wealth of information about it. Essentially it will make your shots more consistent by regulating the amount of air that goes into the marker, making it the same every time. That's a very simplified way of putting it though... there are lots of threads on here that explain it a whole lot better
