Polishing the stock A-5 barrel

I cannot claim the initial idea for the following, all I can do is put it down, I can't find the thread here that lead me to do this. So it may have been on some other site.

Anyway here goes.

First look down your barrel toward a light (with it disconnected from your gun). You will see that any image is fuzzy at best, this is caused by the lack of polishing. We're going to fix that shortly.

Cut one metal hanger 11 or 12 inches long, on one end using a pair of pliers bend over a 1/2 in section almost flat over on itself ( leaving just enough room to slide a shop rag folded in half into it).

Cut a few large patches of shop rag into 4 to 6 inch squares.
I used up 3 you may want to use more. I folded mine on the diagonal, I dunno why, it's just how I roll... Note: you may want to use terry cloth towel in this case bend a slightly longer portion of your hanger over.

I used Imperial Wetordry sandpaper bought from Advance Auto Parts. It's what I had laying around in 1000 and 2000 grit. I tore off 2 inch wide strips roughly 4 inches long of the 1000 grit variety and folded them in half so that they are 4 inches by one inch (with the abrasive material facing out please). The abrasive on the inside helps hold the sandpaper to the rag.

Lay the cloth inside the bent over area of the hanger and begin to twist it tightly. You may find you need to trim your cloths slightly, it's ok... not an exact science. Wrap the sandpaper around the rag roughly in the middle of the rag so that it has rag running on both sides of the paper *Rag*Paper*Rag* is what you're looking for.

I used Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish liberally inside the end of the barrel that I inserted the polishing assembly. I also applied some to the rag and the sandpaper. Insert it manually into the end of the barrel, as it should be a snug but not too tight fit.

From here it's rechargable drill time. Lay the barrel and polisher assembly with the hanger pointed off a table and tighten the drill chuck to the end of the hanger.
MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE HANGER INSIDE THE RAG, YOU DON'T WANT TO MARR THE BORE OF YOUR BARREL.

Once the rag was dirty I would pull out the rig and wrap it in the other direction, voila ... a whole new clean area of rag. Apply more Mothers Polish, either re-use your paper or flip it over, the used abrasive will still be enough to hold the paper still on the rag.

Reverse the direction of the drill now... cause you have changed your wrap direction. Go at it again. Inspect your job by looking toward a light and enjoy your increasingly clear image on the inside area of the barrel. After each round of polishing apply a fresh rag to the polisher and clean all that mothers out of the bore. If you read the directions on the Mothers Polish, it should be removed prior to it drying, I haven't tested this, and it's their product, they oughta know. So be vigilant and keep the polish moist the whole time.

Note: What you are looking for isn't neccesarily fresh aluminum in the barrel bore, that's why we're only using 1000 grit paper here. The main idea is to polish what's existing in there more than to drasticly change the barrel bore size.

When you're done make extra sure that you get ALL the polish out of the bore AND the vents in the barrel.

It's been a pleasure.

Trin

Re: Polishing the stock A-5 barrel

TrinityCustom...
I've noticed a few such writeups from you, and I'm just a n00b to this forum... Great idea.

I've done almost the same thing, except that I purchased an $8 shotgun cleaning kit from KMart, and used the sturdy aluminum rod to hold the cloth...

Also, I used MAAS, and all I did was polish the anodizing on the inside... It's not down to the aluminum, but my demon paintballs on hand already have a good 2mm of space on the top end of the barrel... poor matching.

Since at this point I really don't want to increase my bore size by even .005 inches, I'm not really willing to cut down much more.

Still, the effects of a self-polished barrel are tremendous. The shots seem to be a bit more accurate, and I believe the loss of friction has helped my range out a bit. At any rate, I've got a smoother setup now than I used to.

Additionally, your mod is what I refer to as "ghetto", not meaning low grade or worthless, but capable of being done on serious budget constraints. I like anything I can do with low cost materials on hand or low cost materials which are easily available.
(I can't figure out how to mod my trigger for a mechanical 10-15 bps yet, but I'm still thinking)

I've already dumped $150 on my weapon, and another 20 in oil/grease/squeegee... so justifying any more than $30 for another upgrade will meet with disapproval from the wife... we're saving for a vacation, so any real purchases detract from that.
================================

To anyone else out there,
DO THIS MOD! I can recommend MAAS because it seems that it's little more than Jewler's Rouge with some ammonia to make it into a thinner paste. It has some ultra fine grit, (I can't find out how much yet, but I'm freakin' looking).
The other polishes seem pretty good to, so now you have at least 2 choices.

As an aside, if anyone can find out which has a finer "grit", Mother's or MAAS, I'd be highly interested in that info.

On the former first, check out the trigger spring mod in my sig, it helped me.

On the latter, Amen brother, It's why I went with shop rags and a coat hanger. My wife has been extemely understanding in our first year of marriage... one a-5 off ebay.. another on layaway at the pawn shop. I'm trying not to push my luck. Don't wanna make her .

If you have a camera, take some simulated pictures of this and post it.

Re: Polishing the stock A-5 barrel

Well, friend, I've already ghetto replaced the trigger springs... the sear spring went flying so I took the trigger spring, and stuck it in the sear, and serendipity therefore forced me to do the clicky pen spring mod... While I was at it, I took an Xacto knife to a McDonald's straw, and did a ghetto version of the coffee straw mod. So far nothin's failed...

However, the problem is not so much "my trigger is too hard to move", but rather that my finger only moves around 7 bps in speed. I could go for a double trigger I suppose, and walk it, but then I would have to shift my grip on the handle. That requires a shift in aiming technique, which would throw off accuracy in combat, something I can't psychologically justify.

Preferably, I want a selector switch next to the safety that I can just flick, and go to a "slow automatic" mode of firing around 14 bps. Ideally, there'd be a 3rd selection for 28 or 29 shots per second, if I need to play Heavy gunner.

Re: Polishing the stock A-5 barrel

Actually, I think I have an idea to do this, which is workable, but it would require modifying the rear bolt with some metalwork... and I probably want to patent it before I say anything else... If my idea is any good, I would like to get some cash out of it.
