How to: fake suppressor for under $8.00

I know there's other threads with similar how to's, but it never hurts to see how other people tackle the same problems.

I have some contractors working on a bathroom, and I noticed some piping they weren't using. So of course being an "ABS scientist" I knew it would be useful for something!

I like the look of the Opsgear fake suppressor kits, but they are a bit spendy. So I decided to try and make one on a budget. Most of the ones I've seen are made out of 1 1/2" inner diameter ABS, which looks a bit thick and heavy to me, so I opted for some thinner diameter tubing.

*make sure to wear eye protection, and get help if you don't know how to use the right tools.

1. I got this piping from Home Depot, it's a sink drain pipe made of ABS. It's very thin and light weight which is perfect. It's diameter is 1 1/4".

2. I found some 1 1/4" end caps in the lawn sprinkler section, go get 2 end caps. I think they were about $1.50 each.

3. cut the piping to the length you want. You can make the suppressor as long as you like, I made mine about 5 3/4" long. I also cut the end caps in half, you can toss the end with the wedges on it.

4. test fit the caps, they should fit with some play.

5. Use a drill with a unibit (works good) or Dremel to make some holes in the end caps. Take off a little material at a time to create a centered hole in each endcap. make sure the holes are centered!!

Test fit the caps on your barrel every few minutes, you want to make the caps fit tight. You should be able to "screw" the caps onto the barrrel. Don't worry, the plastic caps won't scratch the barrel (I've re- and re'd mine like 20+ times with no scratches on my Freak All American).
Test fit the caps gain, make sure they're tight!

6. You can just use one cap at the tip of the barrel, and one at the base if you want the suppressor to cover the barrel tip. But for my setup, I want the suppressor to extend past the barrel slightly, so I made one more "middle" cap that fits in between the endcaps. It's made the same way, I just Dremelled off the end flange.

7. Test fit the whole thing. Slide the end cap down the base of the barrel, place the piping on top, and cap the tip with the last endcap. It should look like this.

Re: How to: fake suppressor for under $8.00

8. Give everything a light sanding (I used 400 grit wet sandpaper). make sure to remove the mold lines that run down the piping. Wash everything thoroughly with dish detergent and let it dry.

I painted everything seperately with a few coats of Semi black Krylon. remember to use light coats and let it dry

I used a coat hanger to hold the piping so that I could rotate and paint it.

9. I glued the base end cap (cap closest to the marker) first. I just used hot glue, but you can use 5 minute epoxy if you want more working time.

Install the suppressor with the endcap onto the barrel. You should be able to twist / screw it on. In my case, I pushed it past the tip. I installed a couple of O-rings onto the end of the barrel just for extra retention. The tight fit of the end caps should be good enough.

10. With the O-rings on, I just pulled the suppressor back up towards the end so that the O-rings are holding the "middle" cap down. This will prevent any extra movement.

11. Glue the end cap on the tip. because my suppressor extends past the tip, I enlarged the hole to prevent any ball breaks.

12. Admire your new fake suppressor and count the money you saved!

Very, very nice suppressor. That looks perfect. I see not reason to buy one from a store anymore.

Excellent instructions!

Re: How to: fake suppressor for under $8.00

That has to be the most impressive home made suppressor I've seen so far. Most home built plastic suppressors I see look pretty bad (not to knock anyone). Great work!

Re: How to: fake suppressor for under $8.00

Thanks guys, glad you like it.

This is example looks more like the M4 type, but you can make it whatever size you want (MP5, etc..). This "sink drain" tubing is perfect because it's way lighter than standard ABS.

Enjoy!
