An Introduction To Hydrographic Printing

Hydrographic printing is known by several names. It is also called water transfer printing, cubic printing and fluid imaging. This new printing technology is based on a water-soluble film, upon which printed patterns of ink are applied. Like the new film-based breath mint sheets you can place on your tongue and allow to dissolve, the film base dissolves in the water, leaving the ink, like the mint flavor, behind. The ink then adheres to any item dipped into it.
Thank you. I knew it was ink vs "paint" but for the purposes of the discussion they are interchangeable IMO. But since you brought it up, the big difference between inks and paints are that inks are less stable and are soluble (they contain dyes which are soluble color molecules), while paints (contain pigments which are not as a rule soluble); either suspended in a liquid such as spray paint or in a can applied with a brush, or dry and electrostaticly applied and then baked; are not and are more durable because of it.

When I say "durable" I am not talking specifically about the application and physical durability, but the pigments/colors we see. That is why we see printed items fade faster (by in large) than painted items. It is because of the nature of the coloring and how it reacts to/with its environment. Inks are getting much better now though and can last a good long time.

I didn't want to get into it all though since for this discussion they are really pretty much the same thing (and we also see inks AND paints used in clothing printing as well now days and are almost interchangeable). If any real distinctions were to be made they don't put Liquid Imaging on top for actual durability (as in being colorfast), only in the ability to reproduce a standard pattern with precision on items. And as for durability concerning contact and external forces, all finishes have degrees of physical durability even within their "group". That being said, a player will see virtually no difference in physical durability from Duracoat to Liquid Imaging.

And in all honesty I only mentioned this because you claimed Liquid Imaging to be more durable than Duracoat and it really isn't. Liquid Imaging and Duracoat have their advantages and disadvantages. Durability isn't one thought that should set the other apart as a better choice for customers.

Re: Multicam MP5 - shadow51's

Just a question - why is it that there appears to be a "seam" in the camo pattern on your cyclone?

I'd really have recommended cutting the front lip off and filling in the shroud slot, though.

But otherwise, that thing is beautiful. Have rep.

Then they spray on a clear coat.... my B5 was done by Lacota.

Thanks sharley, I also raised an eye brow at the statement that water transfer is "More duable then duracoat'. My next MC project will be sent to Dbug, he has a really good match for MC in Duracoat.
