I ended up getting a virus on 1/18/10 called "Internet Security 2010." It is an "antivirus-Virus" and is one pervasive sonuvaB....I JUST got my tower back. once uploaded, you can't log on to the internet and if you can, tabs are redirected elsewhere...what a nightmare. Microsoft ranked it a 5/5...

Now I'm up and running again.

A few "skilled users" on the University of Colorado campus got this virus last year. A couple even used their state issued credit cards and bought it!!!

Come to find out, it's produced by a couple different groups in eastern Europe, and the real purpose of the virus is to get you to spend your money and buy their security software. All it does is give you false reports of virus's found and removed. All the while they are just stringing you along until you can't have your credit card company push back the charges to them. Usually 30-60 days depending on the card policies.

So yeah, watch out for that one.



You know of course that this wouldn't have happened if you stay off the porn sites!!!

Glad to see you're back. I had to recover a friend's computer from a similar "anti-virus". We had to load Windows on it from scratch. Thankfully, we were able to save several documents and the music from the original before we did it.

This was a "fatherless child" to get rid of. It came in an email from my daughter's friend. We know this because her computer went down [with it] after she sent the email and 2 days later, ours went down.

Tip, you can use an Ubuntu boot disk or Ultimate Boot Disk to get rid of most virus without needed to reinstall. You just need to know the name and find it, delete and all is good. You can even do a registry repair if needed. You can also move over all the files needed.

Last but not least, I recommend using something like Acronis to make a periodic back up. That way if you need to reload Windows, it is from an image instead of scratch. Takes about 20 minutes to restore. If you must load from scratch, cannot be any easier than using an uNattended disk.

Hh66, his problem was solved long before the thread was even created. And the process you described is a lot more complicated than it sounds, and is usually beyond most users and/or their budget. And yes, I'm an Ubuntu user myself.
