Re: Action Cam on your A5

My mount might be overkill but this is what I did...

I sacrificed the handle-bar mount that comes with the camera for the base that the camera clicks into. I then notched it to match the "bumps" on the rails attached to the shroud. Then (with the flatline disassembled) I drilled through the rails and the shroud housing. Using a short bolt, I used the existing bolt hole in the base, and bolted the assembly together and used a nylon nut to prevent vibration etc from rattling it loose. Without the rails... It might be difficult to keep the "base" from twisting. The catch is getting something to hold the nut on the inside to keep it from turning with the bolt. My shroud is littered with holes that I was able to get a nut-driver through to hold it steady.

That may be more than you want to do to your flatline shroud but it is solid as a rock.

Hopefully that will allow for more consistant video of what's really going on. I just wish there was better sound capture on those things.

SuperOX makes some good points too. A gun-cam alone gives you a lot of ground-shots but the action is fun I found it is difficult to mount a camera on TOP of a goggle that isn't a "full head" goggle - although this makes for the best footage. If you mount on your marker side - you usually end up watching the rear end of your hopper and marker. On the other side it is hard to keep the action in-frame. OR, you have to have such a wide angle on your lens that you can't see the target(s). There are trade-offs to each approach.

In the screen-shot, the "main" picture you see is from a bullet camera - not the SD based Action Cam in your the original post.

Patriot - 640x480 is good quality but when you research cameras - don't look just at resolution - look at the frames-per-second. The ATC2K camera (pictured in the first post) will do 640x480 at 30fps which is good... most others only give you half that at 320x240 at 15fps.

This camera recording at 640x480 at 30fps will use 512MB every 15min - so you can get 1 hour per 2 GB card. They're cheap so get a few to last you a while. However - it is NOT compatible with SDHC cards so anything bigger than 2GB won't work.

This is good camera but you'll get your highest quality videos from a bullet camera and recorder setup - these are significantly more expensive though. I use both and they have their trade-offs.

Re: Action Cam on your A5

I have actually been watching the VholdR camera come into development, and I will be getting one once I get the money for it. LINK

Although this camera is more expensive, it is also a lot smaller, and has a rotating lens.

That VholdR does look pretty sharp. I wonder how much better the audio will be on that thing as compared to the oregon scientific one.

SuperOx... I don't know about the VholdR camera the reason Oregon Scientific camera's audio stinks is because of a "waterproof" membrane over the mic. Since you (your buddy) already have the ATC2K, if you're interested, googling will produce some articles on how to "mod" the camera to remove that membrane. You basically open up that black plastic guard at the bottom, thats the mic, then you remove the membrane and reassemble. It will no longer be waterproof but will be much more sensitive and give you better results.

But then what happens if it gets tagged by a paintball? I only ask because it seems to get hit on a regular basis....

Re: Action Cam on your A5

He He... I understand. The mic is actually recessed in the body of the camera under/behind that "guard". With the guard in place, you won't eliminate the chance of it getting gunked up but the odds are in your favor. Any especially good messes should be cleanable later by removing the "guard" and using rubbing alcohol and q-tips should clean it nicely as long as you don't drench the mic with moisture. The alcohol will evaporate and leave things fairly clean. However, because the mic is on the bottom of the camera - you're less likely to get a direct hit to the mic.
