Playing in the cold

Up here in the great white north, it is to cold to play most days. I am wondering if there is a way around playing when it only get -5 as a high

Re: Playing in the cold

I'm stationed in Alaska, and it's been in the -30's all week and peaked at -45... that's pretty usual (in fact, we're having a strangely warm winter). Although I haven't gotten out to play some Paintball, I would invest in the Gen 2 ECWCS system.

My unit specializes in Arctic Warfare (we're the Northern-Most Army Unit), so we're used to being out and working in the extreme cold. Skis, Snowshoes, Sleds... all that good stuff. We just got the Generation 3 ECWCS system, and although I haven't found the outermost layers anywhere online, the first few consist of the following:

Under Armour ColdGear Tactical Mock <--- that will be the closest to your skin
Under Armour ColdGear Tactical Leggings
Polypropylene Zipper Thermal Top
Polypropylene Thermal Pant
Polypropylene Thermal Neck Gaiter
Microfleece Liner
H2O Proof ECWCS Gen 2 Parka
H2O Proof ECWCS Pant

You can get the following at OpsGear in the Uniforms > Cold Weather section.

Those will keep your warm and dry at around -5 and below. It's expensive, but if you want to play in the negatives, you need to be safe. The most important thing you want to avoid in the extreme cold is sweating. A lot of people think that if they just throw on layer upon layer, they'll be fine. That's as far from the truth as you can get, and that will lead to you becoming a cold weather casualty very quickly. The ECWCS system takes your body's moisture and pushes it to the outermost layer where it will evaporate. This is why when you take off the system, your outer-most layer will be damp. You're also going to want to get a pair of Goretex boots, or winter-boots from either a military store or a hunting store.

Now, just to throw in there... we have a nifty puffy grey suit that we wear when it's REALLY cold. It's made out of the same material as our sleeping systems, which are rated to -60*F I believe. Good stuff!

Newton...I just posted an article on this very subject. Search my username or look towards the top on this section for it (since it's still a new topic).

Re: Playing in the cold

HPA all the way. And Polar Ice or other winter paint. Tastes even worse but at least it doesn't freeze.

Double Tap has excellent advice. Dress in layers and take it easy. Sweat+winter=no fun.
