WARNING GRAPHIC Paintball Vs Eyeball

5/18/12 - Paintball is one of the safest sports out there (statistically safer than bowling), but there is still the possibility for someone to get hurt. Therefore, I have stickied this thread to be a cautionary tale to others. -Baby Ollie

So it's 5 months since my last game and there I was on Sunday, pumped up and ready to go. Last game for the day and I'm in the safe zone and what happens?

That's right, from out in the field of play comes a paintball through the screen and finds my eye. I have just got home from hospital after a 4 day stay, 5 different types of eye drops and 3 different painkillers. At the moment I have total loss of vision and won't know if it will be fixable. The lense in my eye is shattered and the headaches are really bad. The only saving grace is the fact that the paintball didn't break, otherwise it would have been a whole lot worse. Please feel free to post this on the other forums to illustrate what can happen to your eye when hit. That way, hopefully people who are new to the sport will realise why it is important to keep your mask on at all times no matter what. I wouldn't want this happening to anyone else. Just to let you know, when I was hit it felt like my eyeball was coming out the back of my head. Play safe, be safe, have fun.

Holy! I really hope you end up alright! I hope the painkillers help keep everything under control in the meantime, and i hope that something can be done about it. How are you handling it? (So far like a pro given this post)

Thanks guys, as I said, it could have been worse and thankfully it was me that got hit and not one of the kids that were playing. THAT would have been bad.

Re: WARNING GRAPHIC Paintball Vs Eyeball

Wow...hopefully everything works out...one of the last times I went to one of my fields, we had just gotten to our "camp" in the parking lot and a hail of paintballs came over the mesh from the field 20 or feet directly in front of us...I have to be honest, my eyes were the last thing I was worried about...now I am sure we all will be more careful. Shared it on FB.

I agree that it would have been terrible for a kid to have gotten hit in the eye, but still.. I cant imagine having that happen! Safety masks and paintballs are not to be taken lightly.

Re: WARNING GRAPHIC Paintball Vs Eyeball

So what did the docs say about it? can you still see light if your eye is closed? It looks a lot like Hyphema to me. A friend of mine had Hyphema after getting in a car accident, and an opthalmologist (sp?) had to drain it, but he did get his vision back.
