Re: Mask Fans: Are they worth it?

Granted yes having a fan will do the trick for clearing up a mask. Thats all fine and dandy if you play speedball. But for woodsball when you need your eyes and ears to sniff out a potential ambush, Having the sounds of a 20lb mosquito in your ear is just unacceptable. I use a JT double layer thermal lens, Granted it does get moist inside the mask but the lens has never fogged on me yet. I've been using the same style mask for over 15 years now. A few years ago I was walking a fire trail in a game and a buddy on my team came up behind me with his fan running. I turned to him and stated that his fan was loud. His response. 'What?" I repeated, Your fan, Is loud. His reply, "Hang on, Let me turn this thing off so I can hear you." I was less then 5 feet from him. Now, This is obviously my personal opinion. But why have a mask that requires battery's and the loss of your ability to hear whats going on around you when you can get a mask that wont fog in the first place. Granted wearing glasses you don't have many options. My hearing sucks so I have to have every advantage that I can get.

If I had a fan in my mask, I would leave it off until my mask started to fog up and turn it off as soon as the fog was gone. That way you don't waste battery, it gets rid of fog, and it's not loud. To leave them on for the whole game is kind of dumb IMO.

Re: Mask Fans: Are they worth it?

JT vortex here, I swear by them. I been using them for two years and my mask only fogged once. It cleared up after I calmed down and let the fans do their thing.

The sound bothers a little but nothing big for me.

ive got a brand new pair of events and they fog. i played last saturday and couldnt see 10ft in front of me the whole day and that was with the tinted thermal lens. i used the single payne clear lens once and all the antifog came off.
btw i think the fans are great but there a little too expensive. but its still better to spend $60 then not be able to see.

Re: Mask Fans: Are they worth it?

I dont see a need for a fan. You could take that money and put it towards a nicer thermal mask. I have the Vents Cylus with 2 lenses. The stock lens rarely fogged, and when it did it was just a tiny bit around the nose. I bought a blue tinted lens a bit later... it doesnt fog at all, and I have played in every weather condition imaginable for PA. rain, snow, cold heat, humidity. Works like a charm, and I breathe hard too.

Thats way I bought $15 a piece fans that are rated at like 14db @ 5V and I run them at 3V or 4.5V (boost button). You can bearly heard them

If anyone is going to Judge Dredd at Sherrwood, I will bring my 'old' Profiler if you want to take a look and hear.

I'm from Iowa. I play mostly in the midwest so hot and humid during the summer is the general forecast.

Re: Mask Fans: Are they worth it?

I've had a JT Proteus with the goggle fan for about two years, and just switched to the Dye I3 with fan. The fans do not make that much noise, far less than a 250lb. ogre stumbling through the woods with no vision because his mask is fogged.

I'd say masks are worth it. Some of us sweat more than others, and fogging is a serious problem. All the anti-fog lenses that work well fog at some point or another, especially after they get dirty. And the anti-fog chemicals only work with non-thermal lenses, or else the thermal coating flakes off. I would say fans are a plus, homemade or otherwise...

That's too true. I sweat like crazy any time I do anything which is why I'm happy to have my fan.

Re: Mask Fans: Are they worth it?

I WAS HAVING MAJOR MASK FOG ISSUES, THEN A BUDDY TOLD ME TO PUT PALMOLIVE LIKE THE DISH WASHING LIQUID, YOU PUT IT ON THE INSIDE, RUB IT AROUND LET IT SIT OVER NIGHT THEN RUB OFF THE EXCESS THE NEXT DAY AFTER IT DRIES, SO FAR NO FOG PROBLEMS, IT SEEMS GOOD TO ME...
