there is a reason it worked, but your theory is way off.

fact is, muscles burn calories. The bigger your muscles, the more calories you can burn. more the calories you burn, the more fat your body will use.

HOWEVER: You are NOT burning fat while lifting weights. You burn fat when you are NOT lifting. IE sleeping, sitting, etc. All biochemistry aside, the fat is slowly consumed by the body through the day as it recovers from the workout.

I agree. 1g/kgBW is the maximum the human body can possibly absorb. A ratio reserved for competitive strength / muscle building athletes.

I weight 155 lbs, which is about 71 kg. That would be about 71g of protein daily. I know I'm nowhere near that in my daily consumption.
You would be if you drank a 20g protein shake.

Besides, you really can't eat too much protein, especially if trying to gain muscle mass.
True. Well, there is such a thing as protein poisoning that you can get from eating huge amounts of ultra lean meat, but that is so rare. But with the intake of meat comes the intake of other harmful things. Like fat, mercury (fish), red meat is known to obstruct the bowels, etc. Whey protein is a good way to get that "extra" protein in your diet so your body has all it can possibly need without taking in any extra fat and minimal calories.

In addition, protein is an energy source like carbs (they have the same calorie count per gram), so taking in more than you need means those excess calories get converted to fat.
