My comment wasn't directed at you Gotpaint92, but what the guide had told you. Sometimes people in a position of authority have absolutely no clue what they are talking about. Luckily, you can always take it upon yourself to educate yourself which includes posting on forums like this one. ![]() Here's the thing about sports drinks in general and Gatorade specifically: People have been drinking prodigious amounts of the stuff for well over 20 years. If there was a problem with it, it would periodically be in the news. Obviously, that's not the case. On the flipside, drinking too much water will kill you (i.e. hyponatremia). Physical exertion and profuse sweating compounds the problem, but it's not required. Here's a recent case in point that got a bit of attention: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16614865/ I don't know of any case were sport drink was blamed for killing someone. That's not to say that those kinds of drinks won't give you an upset stomach, but that's something you need to work out before game day. Everyone's stomach is different. I have friends that swear by Cytomax, but after I drink about 12-14 oz (not all at once) I feel completely bloated and not very happy. On the other hand, I can guzzle 32 oz of Lemon-Lime Gatorade without ill effects. That doesn't make Cytomax a bad product...it's just not right for me.

| Re: Proper Hydration Rule of thumb (if you're a shortie) is drink water till you piss water. Meaning drink until your pee is fairly clear not yellowish, dark yellow, gold or in extreme cases your pissing sand. When I was in boot camp we actually had signs over the piss troughs indicating the amount of water (canteens) and time to drink them in to rehydrate yourself.

| Re: Proper Hydration My team happens to be sponsored by a hydration company. They make neat little packets of energy gel (full of good carbs). They also make a powder to be mixed with water that is similar (but better) than gatorade. It's called carb-boom OK done with my sponsor work. Seriously though nothing is more vital to your system than staying hydrated. Drink drink drink!!!!! |

Carification: The sugar does nothing for transport of water across the intestinal wall. It helps transport the sodium. The sodium then causes a hyperosmotic state in the blood stream which pulls the fluid across the cellular wall into the blood. water absorbtion is osmotic. Sodium transoprt is is a chemical transport requiring transport proteins to carry the sodium through the cellular barrier. Glucose helps initiate this transfer of sodium through the transfer proteins. Water then moves to dilute the sodium and maintain homeostasis
