Please help with barrel choice

Hi. I'm quite new at paintball and just bought a nice looking A5 with Egrip.

I want to get a new barrel, and after searching the web and getting feedback from friends, I've identified 3 barrels that seems nice.

-Dye Ultralite
-J&J Ceramic barrel
-Tippmann Sniper barrel

From what I've understood, it seems that the Ultralite would be the better of the 3, but since it's also way more expensive, I will wait and maybe get it later... So between the J&J and the tippmann, which one would you get?

I know that the J&J is "self cleaning" when paint breaks, and I've heard that the Tippmann is, at the total opposite, a pain in the *** when it happens. Other than that, what are the pros/cons? Which one would you recommend?

Also, if I were to get the Ultralite, which bore size should I get? I do not buy my own paintballs since the field where I play doesn't allow you to bring your own, you must buy the paintballs from them, but I don't know which size of paintballs they use... So I'm thinking "medium size" bore. so what is medium? .688??

Re: Please help with barrel choice

I'd go with the J&J personally. It's priced right, reliable and accurate, and you might find you never want to change to another. But if you do, you don't have a bunch of money invested in it. I don't have one, but it was my second choice after my SpecOps Blackcell C carbon fiber barrel.

Re: Please help with barrel choice

First thing is find the bore size of the paint. Anyone at your field that has a barrel kit will be able to tell you.

I would highly recomend the J&J over the Tippmann. You just really cant go wrong with a J&J. If you think you may want to go Dye, there is also the Excel. It is a good all around barrel and not too expensive.

I'd also add support to the J&J. I played for about a year and a half with a 14" J&J and loved it. As badmofo63 said, it's reliable and accurate and the price won't kill your budget.

I went on to get a flatline, otherwise I probably wouldn't have changed barrels.

Re: Please help with barrel choice

Alright thanks I'll probably go with the J&J...

This brings another question... I would also like to get a shroud for the barrel because I want my gun to have a mil sim look... Do you know of any shrouds that would fit the J&J 14'' barrel?

I found this one which looks nice : http://www.actionvillage.com/is-bin/...AAD98EHUDrn%2e

Do you think it will fit the J&J?

Any other shroud to suggest? A hand guard could also be considered but it won't cover all the barrel and I fear it won't look good...

Re: Please help with barrel choice

i have the 14" j&j ceramic and its awesome. the self cleaning feature is nice too. i would think that as long as its the standard j&j ceramic (not the 2 piece, and not the one with the tapered end) a shroud should fit it, but the barrel is not completely straight. it flares out a little at both ends. the best thing to do would probably be to contact the company you are thinking about getting the shroud from, and ask if it will fit the j&j. they should know if it will fit.

Re: Please help with barrel choice

I believe that actually has differnt ends with it so it will fit on different barrels. Anyone that has one, please post up if that is corret. I looked at the Lapco shroud at the local shop but didnt fully read how to install it.

Bullseye, I actually like to build stuff like that myself. The key to shrouds and most paintball mods at home is a Dremel tool. They are great little gizmos. You can take a piece of PVC pipe and then cut the holes out for the machine gun shroud look. Use reducers on each end where the barrel slides in. You have to sand the reducers out with most barrels, and use a set screw on each end to hold it on. Paint it flat black. Looks almost as good and cost $10 at most if you already have a Dremel or borrow one.

Just a thought. After you start making mods, you kinda get hooked making stuff.

I found this one which looks nice : http://www.actionvillage.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=F1G-jKRePBy-VeJyKGx-JK74qP7HhaSA-EM=?ProductID=l7jAqArbVw4AAAD98EHUDrn%2e

You might have a look at Opsgear, they have a number of nice shrouds and a wide selection of mods for the A5.

On a side note, I have one of the SR6 shrouds, and I like it very much. It allows me to have a shroud without having to mount it directly to the barrel with set-screws or anything of that sort. But the manufacturing quality of opsgear products, is defineately top notch!

Re: Please help with barrel choice

J&J ceramic. The flatline is really nice if you match your paint up correctly, but a pain in the butt when stuf breaks.

Im surprised no one has mentioned the PPS Brass barrel? C'mon guys, this is the A5OG remember?! lol

Everyone has had great success with this barrel. Im planning on checking this barrel out myself, same for the J&J. The only downside to the Palmers is that it is not self-cleaning, and for this reason alone I may lean towards the J&J. Simmy, you had both, which would you reccommend out of the bunch?
