Re: Which Brass?

I have shot a couple cases of .691 paint through my .685 palmers and no problems so far and I think I'v only gotten like 1 break if I can remember.

Re: Which Brass?

With most high pressure paint guns a 12in is usualy optamal, i would not go shorter than 10 or longer than 14in with out testing it first, acuracy will probily be compromized. Now a low pressure gun like an auto cocker will often need a 14-16in barrel. It is a complex science dealing with flow and preassure. Remember that a paint ball acts much like a watter ballon in flight and will distort in and as it leaves the barrel. Porting in a barrel can greatly reduce the distortion of the paint ball (as it leaves the barrel). The idea behind porting is to let the atmospheric pressure stabalize around the ball befor it leaves allwing it to exit the barrel cleanly and with little to no distortion. As a general rule the higher working pressure of your gun the shorter the barrel you can get away with. There are other options to help change the way your gun will preform, for instance a true venturi bolt will alow the gass to expand with out losing any velocity, reqiering less pressure behind it. A bolt with an insert to create turbulance will drop the pressure behind the ball causing less distortion. If you can read up on gass laws (boils, venturi) and gain an understanding of turbulant and laminer flow and how they effect pressure you can mix and match bolts, springs, valves, and barrels to trully bring out the best in your gun. If you prefer one brand/make of paint measure it and go with a boar diameter slightly larger.

Re: Which Brass?

I have a question, why is not one using the ported brass barrels from palmers for their a-5 but instead the non-ported ones. Wouldn't it be more effective with the ports?

Re: Which Brass?

The apex adds 3". I had a 12" and it felt really really long after i added the apex which came to 15". So i voted for 10" .690

Re: Which Brass?

I had my Palmer Brass Barrel custom made to fit flush at the end with my OSP SD MP-5 Long Shroud. 11-9/16" long with dual porting 690 bore to be able to use any size ball.

Porting is more for quieting it down in the case of palmers. Most people don't run ported due to the cost to have it done. The A-5 is a noisy beast so to add porting for $45+ to make it only margionally more quiet just isn't worth it. Yes it would be more effeciant, but for the money just not worth it.

Re: Which Brass?

Has anyone called Palmers to get their input on this?

Re: Which Brass?

I called Palmers and was told if you only shoot small paint, then .685, otherwise get the .690. Also, the best lenght is 12" in their opinion.

Re: Which Brass?

Either the 10 or 12 in .690 would be your best bet. You can always add the Python Compression kit later on for smaller balls.
