| OK DDay 2009 - CanScot recruitment thread In the words of jester1349; "Brave the guns and fortifications of the Atlantic Wall to storm Sword Beach with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, the East Yorkshire Regiment, or the Canadian Scottish Regiment, as part of the 3rd Infantry Division! And experience camping life like you never thought possible. To join the Can Scots join the 3rd ID and in comments put Can Scots." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Historical moment: "British/Canadian 3rd Infantry Divisions - Iron Division" The early morning of the 6th June 1944 was dry but a stiff breeze was blowing. Dawn found the East Yorkshire Regiment preparing to load into its landing craft, and although there were distant sounds of war, the whole atmosphere was exactly as though this was just another exercise. The landing craft were lowered into the heavy swell, took up their appointed stations and commenced the run in. The landing craft pushed on, just a little behind the amphibious 'D D' tanks of A & B Squadrons of the 13/18th Hussars and as the landing craft approached the shore of 'Queen Red' beach, Major C K 'Banger' King, commander of A Company, read the words of Shakespeare’s Henry V to his men to calm their nerves. The East Yorks performed well on D Day and achieved all their objectives, but not without loss. On 6 June 1944 C Coy Canadian Scots/Royal Winnipeg Rifles was in the first wave to step ashore in Normandy , the rest of the Regiment following. The Scots proceeded to advance a total of six miles - farther than any other assault brigade of the British Second Army that day. Join the Commonwealth Infantry and assault Sword Beach on June 9th, 2007! Fight along side the 13/18th Hussars Armored unit and the #41 Royal Marines. Storm Sword Beach and link up with the British 6th Airborne and break the German defenses! The British 3rd Infantry Division, known as the Iron Division, was originally formed in 1809 by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington for service in the Peninsula War, and was known as the Fighting 3rd under Sir Thomas Picton during the Napoleonic Wars. The Division fought at the battle of Waterloo, the Crimean War and the Second Boer War. The Division was part of the ill-fated British Expeditionary Force evacuated from Dunkirk early in World War II. It was the first British division to land at Sword Beach beach on D-Day and fought through the Battle of Normandy and later the invasion of Germany. For the campaign in Normandy, the division was commanded by Major General T.G. Rennie until the 13 June, 1944; The formation of the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division was fromed on 17 May 1940. The division's 8th Canadian Infantry Brigade and 9th Canadian Infantry Brigades began embarking as early as July 1, 1941 and arrived in the UK at the end of that month. The 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade embarked in August and arrived at the beginning of September. After its arrival, the division spent three uneventful years in garrison and training duties prior to the assault landing on Juno Beach in Normandy. | Re: OK DDay 2009 - CanScot recruitment thread Over on the 1st Exp forces (Allied) forum, there is a great need for marching band members for the Welsh Guard Band. I was also talking about a Pipe and Drum Corps for the CanScot Regiment and Parade processional as well. It seems it is very difficult for Sir Raymond to get the needed members and is asking for some help. If you are capable, or know fellow ballers who are going that are, please refer them to these links and lend a hand! Thanks!
