Tech Help from PD/FD/EMS

Hey all,

As some of you may know, I'm the head of a small animal cruelty investigations unit in PA. We're installing our first mobile unit (laptop/Jotto Desk combo) in our new vehicle, and I have one question:

How do I keep this thing from cooking when the vehicle isn't on? Is there some way to make this happen, or do I need to remove the laptop from the vehicle each time I park it for a significant amount of time (i.e., back at the shop for the night or a few hours, etc.)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cooking in what sense? Sunlight? Overcharging?

Well any kind of cooling system would drain the battery. You could get a panasonic toughbook. That is what most cop cars have in them. They can stand up to just about anything. Prolonged direct sunlight, spills, hard inpacts and bumps, a regular laptop hard drive will be ruined by the constant vibrations driving around in a vehicle. but they are quite expensive.

Re: Tech Help from PD/FD/EMS

I was wondering if even the toughbook could withstand some of the temps we've had here lately...cab in my vehicle has topped out at 157 with the recent heatwave.

Thanks for the help.

Might be an ugly solution - but perhaps a Mylar drape?

Let me ask one of my teammates. He works in a cop shop

Re: Tech Help from PD/FD/EMS

Ok, this is what I've got.

IQ's department does four things:

-Chassis mount, allows for airflow
-A/C plays an important role
-His department also uses the Toughbook
-Apparently, they went with a tech support contract that will cover this sort of damage.

Unfortunately, little of this seems applicable to your setup, given that you've already got the hardware, but I figured I should still pass it on.

Re: Tech Help from PD/FD/EMS

Perhaps a cooler? Or even something similar that can be filled with a liquid.

Re: Tech Help from PD/FD/EMS

I was interested in these "cooling pads" a while ago, and tried the Targus, The Antec, and the Cooler Master.

All got returned after monitoring my core temp under heavy and light loads, with no noticeable effect.
