My 11 year old daughter Elizabeth is exceptionally bright, having an IQ of 137. She plays the violin and is 1st chair, 1st violin in her middle school orchestra.

Her Conductor is also the Band master...who came to her and said "we need more people in the band...are you interested?" She said, "Hrm...what's the closest instrument to a Bag Pipe?" and he responded "probably the Clarinet." She said, "OK fine" and brought the instrument home - not having a single lesson or knowing how to assemble the instrument....

For the past few weeks, she has been dabbling with playing my practice chanter and knows the scale, some grace notes and a few tunes from the College of Piping tutor book...

Within 3 hours she managed to teach herself the freaking clarinet with only the book as her guide and she was done with the book.

She went back the next day and the Band Master asked how she was doing and she offered an "audition" for the clarinet. According to Elizabeth's girlfriend (who is about as bright and is like a conjoined twin...always at her side), the Band Master stood there with his jaw hanging open...

She came home with more music and within 7 hours, is playing the first 4 musical selections for their street parade medley......

What the freak?

To make this all funny.....she can't walk and chew gum at the same time. She trips walking across a level floor.

Am I doomed or what??

yeah...my Pipes cost $700 20-some years ago and in non-working order. Since mine were made pre-1900 (and no longer made), I have them insured for $10,000

New Pipes are more expensive than what I paid for mine...David Naill in particular, at about $1800 for the stand I'd get her. Naile Pipes (IMO) are the best to be had....

You were doomed just for the fact that you had a daughter... Have you ever heard the song Hey Mister by Custom? I remember back when I was dating this girl that was 10 years younger than me (she was 19, I was 30 at the time), that song came on the radio the first time she was taking me to meet her parents... Her mother was only 7 years older than me. In spite of the age difference we had a lot in common, and things went really well between us for 6 years.

Sounds like it's a bit off topic I know, but the reason I thought of it was because she was also very intelligent. Her IQ was 136 if I recall correctly, all the more amazing for the fact that she dropped out of high school at 16 and got her GED and then went to college. Because she was bored with high school. You never had to explain anything to her more than once and she'd pick it right up.

Keep her occupied, indulge her interests.

As she learns more instruments she'll learn instruments quicker. Once you learn one, all the other come faster because you already know allot about music. After I first learned violin, guitar, piano, and mandolin came pretty naturally. Now I'm thinking of offering to learn a brass instrument for our Jazz band.

Just encourage her to learn all the instruments she can. Music makes you smarter. And red dog, put me in touch with your genius ex. I need help in math. lol.

I think you are very blessed to have such an intelligent daughter. If you think she'll make good use of the pipes, then go ahead and get them for her. "There's nothing wrong will spoiling children, as long as you don't spoil them rotten" - my mother.

BTW - All throughout my schooling I hated language; reading, writing(I couldn't stand writing essays), etc., but know I find myself getting compliments on Product reviews that I write & I can't figure it out because Language was always my worst subject. Surprisingly, I learned HTML in less than a month...

You Sir are Blessed not Doomed!!!! A musical prodigy in your home. Get her into the pipes, there is nothing like the sound of the pipes! Especially at say, 6 am and coming from you neighbors back yard!!

Druid, I would offer same advice as others... Don't be scared keep being proud, encourage never discourage and feel blessed that your family was given such a gift...
