To that point, it has always been my opinion that much of that poor reputation comes from officers dutifully enforcing ill conceived laws.

It becomes the public perception that law enforcement itself feels a given law is useful or appropriate (they may or may not). Many simply do not understand that law enforcement is part of the executive branch of government and simply carries out the will of its respective legislative branches. Thus the anger or distaste should be directed to those that make the laws.

Then we think of how we really live in a representative democracy (at least the U.S.), so the law maker is ultimately us! Ah the irony!

Personally i think a "truly" self ruling group of people is a better alternative to government, but everything has its drawbacks.
