It's a common thing for non-military types to be confused by the military acronyms. And believe me, there's a TON of military acronyms. The Army FM (Field Manual) 101-5-1 (which was recently superceded) has a dictionary of acronyms. It's about 250 pages and is incomplete by about 40%.

MOS is Military Occupational Specialty, an alpha-numeric job classification number. Different services code differently for the same job which only adds to the confusion. For instance, the job title Infantryman in the Army is 11B, in the Marine Corps it's 0311. To make it even more confusing there are trailing alpha-numeric characters in the Army system, the Skill Level Identifier (SLI) and Additional Skill Identifier(s) (ASI) For a list of ASI's click here. My sig shows that I am a 37F3H - 37F is Psychological Operations, the 3 is my skill level (3 is E-6/ Staff Sergeant) and the H is an ASI indicating that I am instructor. Even worse, the Army has recently changed all of the ASI's from alpha-numeric to numeric only, so technically my H should be an 8.

ASVAB is the Armed Servies Vocational Aptitude Battery. It's a series of tests to check the level of education in certian skills. The military has pre-requisite ASVAB test scores for different jobs. For instance there's a GT (General Technical) Score (most jobs refer to this number), an ST, GM, etc.

Re: Military Service

I'm a US Marine Corps Officer Candidate in the Platoon Leaders' Class program. It's like being in ROTC, but all of our training is during the summer.
Said training is either two 6-week trainings, or one 10-week. I went in 2004 and broke my arm half way through. I went back the next year and finished Juniors (1st 6 weeks). This summer I'm going back for Seniors, and assuming I graduate (Candidates can still be kicked out if deemed unqualified, and many are), I'll be off to The Basic School soon after. I know some Arabic, and I'm gunning for an intelligence MOS, preferably human intel.

I was a Sea Cadet in high school, too. It's a great organization for anyone interested in the military, especially any naval branch. I went to boot camp at Aberdeen Proving Ground, and worked at the Rochester, NY Coast Guard Station (twice), went to Lemoore Naval Air Station and worked on F/A-18s, and went on an exchange trip to Korea with Sea Cadets from all over the world. They even paid for my plane tickets to/from Korea. Not many high schoolers get those kinds of opportunities. Look them up if you're even remotely interested. They have a SEAL school, too, and from what I heard it's pretty serious.

an OO-RAH to the Marines, and a pitty clap for everyone else (j/k).

Ahem *smirk* It's Hoo Yah... ask any Seal, of course the best ones, you'd never know who you were talking to... mores the pity

You have just been indoctrinated into the Brotherhood of Squids and Jarheads.... welcome future Marine... WE may bark at one another, but I can attest to this personally.. if you require cover... we look out for one another... kinda like step siblings... hehe

Squids & Jarheads: Yep, we yell at one another, talk trash about each other and generally give the impression that the other branch is lower than low.

But don't try and get between us:
