sniper bullpup - SVD-10 Dragunov UPDATED!!!

well gents, I'm at it again.

got bored the other day after Operation Cheap Stock and my brother and I were BSing about bullpups. Then after a day of chasing him through the 'shack city' at the local field, I decided I needed to shorten my marker.

The problem is that I hate bullpups. By and large, they're just ugly. Every last one. Yeah, that includes the P90. It's not as ugly as others, but real close. Worse yet, it's not something you're gonna hack together in the garage in an afternoon, especially for free.

So I looked what I think is the best looking sniper rifle for inspiration: the SVD "Dragunov", and came up with the following wood-stocked bullpup.

As the design has Soviet roots, I'm following the usual convention for naming combat rifles and calling it the SVD-10 "Dragunov II". Originally, I wanted to open up the bottom of the stock exactly like the open stock of the SVD, but I decided against it to protect the innards.

It's not finished, the barrel isn't actually installed yet and I need to fab the new trigger parts. The next step is to cut the top off the barrel guard, inlet the barrel, and cut the soviet-signature vents in the wood. There's enough space that I could actually carve out a chamber to fit the entire stock pistol grip inside the stock. If I did that, this would likely be the first ever bullpup mod that didn't make irreversible changes to the marker.

I'm gonna make at least one more, from walnut, for my brother's BT4. He wants a shorter barrel cover on his to fit an AK style gas tube.

UPDATED AGAIN - check out page 5

Now, the pics:

grip close up:

next steps:
  • finish getting the marker installed (includes in-stock reg and volumizer)
  • repaint the marker body
  • stain and seal the stock
  • fabricate a soviet-style scope mount for the red-dot
  • mag sticking out the bottom about where the grip ends?
  • soviet bipod?
  • under-barrel Q-Loader?
Oh - the only power tool used was a saber-saw to rough the outline. Everything else is hand-tooled.

Re: sniper bullpup - SVD-10 Dragunov II

why not try to incorperate a zeus or longbow mag instead of having a cyclone on your "sniper" mod

it looks really good so far.

We'll see. I haven't decided how to feed it yet.

Ronin, I plan to. I may even offer some for sale.

Ox71, it occurred to me that I might be able to sneak a tube mag inside the foregrip on the next one. With that setup or the q-loader, I'd use Borg's 'removable' q-loader mount with a twist. He used a liberally epoxied 90* copper plumbing elbow. I'd mod the elbow and solder it to a copper/brass plate that I could attach with the stock cyclone screw.

BTW, (if I can afford it) I'm wanting to use parts manufactured for the SVD on this.

The scope mount I have in mind:

The bipod:

Both are aftermarket parts, of course. The 'factory' bipod starts at $800, while the one above is only $40 and the factory PSOP scope mount has soviet scope rings instead of rails (of course!) and there's no way a soviet scope would work for paintball. The mount above runs $57.

Oh, and I finally found angled (oblique) pictures of the SVD, and I need to put a pretty steep angle on the sides of my handguards to get the look closer.

Re: sniper bullpup - SVD-10 Dragunov II

Progress report:

I have the insides of the stock carved to fit my 'pipe-volumizer version 2', trigger mechanism and the rest of the crap that goes under the marker. I glued the halves together, but I forgot to take pictures of the inside of the stock before I glued it.

It's not that big of a deal, though. I got thinking about and easier way to do the trigger, and it occurred to me that if the stock was just a bit taller, I could actually fit the entire pistol grip inside the stick, or more realistically, I could chop the bottom off of an AK mag and use it as a cover where the grip sticks out the bottom of the stock.

More pictures coming soon...

BTW, does anyone happen to know how to authentically refinish the wood on an AK47? I want to duplicate that finish on the SVD10. I've been sure to beat the wood up a bit while building this thing so it starts out looking well-used.
