Ok, here's the hypothetical situation. 2 teams get down to one man each and both end up with no ammo. One player grabs a loose paintball off the ground and throws it at the other guy. It hits him in the mask and explodes. Is it a legal kill?

Sure, why not?
He was marked, it was safe, he's out.

Well even if no one wants to admit it this is a game based on war and in war you can't throw a spent round and kill some one so I say no. It's a tie

Did the ref call the ?
Did the guy who got hit think the game was over and was walking in the open?
If it was me and group of friends I would say he is out, but if it was a tourney I would say he is not out mainly because in tourneys rules are rules and regardless of how weak a throw is, he used a device that has not been chrono'ed.

I don't think your arm would be considered a device. I do agree with you in the sense that not enough info was given. Regardless, whoever marks a player by throwing a paintball is my hero. I'm gonna have to say that should count.

Yep. To be honest if someone managed to get close enough to me and then threw a paintball and hit me right on the mask with enough force for it to pop, no only would I immediately call myself out and laugh my ass off about it when we got back to the staging area I would probably buy him a drink at the end of the night too.
At the end of the day it's just a game and something like that would give me one heck of a kick and a story to tell.

Besides- to look at it a different way; what if the hit is not allowed and then the next game my tac-8 is low on gas and shoot a low power shot and someone claims it was thrown. (which it will look like)

Better just keep it that every hit counts.

It's been done at my local paintball field. Definitely a kill shot, if the ball explodes on contact no matter which way he's out!
