Pieing a Corner

PIEING A CORNER

Most paintballers when they approach a corner simply walk up to it and do a quick head check around the corner. Although this may be the most effective way to look around obstacles such as bunkers. This is not the correct way to check corners or doorways.

Checking corners and doorways requires a little more care than that. There are three things that you need to do before you look around that corner or check a doorway.
-Stop and listen. Most people don't stop their motion and listen to whats going on around the corner or through the doorway. These are the most dangerous situations that you can put yourself in and any information you can obtain is vital.

-Check your 6 and flanks. You need to do a good survey of what is going on around you that you can see or hear. So when your attention is focused on that corner or doorway. Your not putting yourself at risk for not maintaining sufficient situational awareness.

-Equipment check. Check your air/Co2 and paint. You'll be surprised how many people rush into an unknown situation without being prepared for the worst.

Now when your prepared to take on that corner or doorway. You need to proceed slowly from a doorknob down position and looking down the sights of your marker ready to fire. Your movement should be moving away from the wall. Using the corner or the doorway as a center point. You should stay at about 3 feet away from that center point moving in a circular pattern slowly revealing and dissecting the hallway or door opening your clearing. Use the diagram bellow to further understand the movement.

The reason for maintaining a little distance between yourself and the corner or doorway is that if you take overwhelming fire from around the corner or through that doorway. You not only have the option of stepping back sideways to seek cover. But because of the angle you created. You have the option of stepping forward towards the wall to seek cover. In stepping forward towards the wall to take cover. This allows you to continue firing accurate shots until you are out of the sight line of your enemy. With you swinging a little wide on the corner it allows any teammate to get an unobstructed view of the hall in front of the doorway or hall that your sweeping. So it allows for your teammates to cover you wile your are focused on the task at hand.

This manner of checking/clearing an area is known as pieing.

more to the point, it's called "slicing the Pie" but good write up just the same...

Re: Pieing a Corner

Awesome post....great for playing paintball and rainbow six vegas terrorist hunt....lol.

This is the kind of thing that ALL players should read...familiarize....practice....walk through the house....and think about non stop. Otherwise..you get in a situation with someone who is a tactical nightmare and everything is ruined.

This is a great skill to use. You'd be surprised at how many people you can get the drop on with it. Its a standard training drill at your agency.

The things I posted in my CQB thread is the basis in which all other tactics are drawn from. Our tactics are modified and tailored to my facility...as would be tailored for any other facility...but yes...we use these tactics as the "starting" point to do what we do.

...and they work...that's the best part of it. The key is constant training. Ours [for work] is live fire (FN303s, riot shotguns, smoke/flashbangs/etc), whereas in paintball, your team doesn't even need paint/air just to train. Simply gear up and go through the motions and have other team members or [what we call] spotters to watch and evaluate your moves. Get them on video so you can see what they are talking about. Use everything you would take into the field....masks on, markers up, vests, everything. It takes a lot of practice to get the movements right, timed properly and executed fluidly. When you think you got it down, start adding paint and air. Have a team leader set up static targets of average human size (cardboard) in your engagement areas where you have no idea where he placed them...and engage them as if they were your opponents. Have the leader change them each game to make the difficulty level rise.

Re: Pieing a Corner

This tactic is useful not only for corners, but also as an augment to an entry stack. I would never do it in real life, but in paintball it always seems to work.
