MOUT Basics

MOUT – Military Operations in Urban Terrain

Selecting Defensive positions in buildings:
  1. Fields of Fire – To prevent isolation, positions should be mutually supporting and capable of firing in ALL directions... “Interlocking Fields of Fire”
  2. Dispersion – Avoid establishing a position in a Single building when it is possible to occupy two or more buildings that will permit mutually supporting fires. A position in one building, WITHOUT mutual support, is vulnerable to bypass, isolation, and eventual destruction by assaults from any direction.
  3. Observation – Should permit observation of adjacent defensive sectors.

Preparing Defensive positions in buildings:
  1. Fields of Fire – Be sure they are interlocking and cover ALL avenues of approach
  2. All entry way MUST be guarded or booby trapped to minimize infiltration while you are scanning you designated sector.
  3. STAY ON DEFENCE!!! STICK TO THE OBJECTIVE!! - don't be sucked into leaving your positions to pursue the enemy... unless ordered to.
Offensive MOUT Tactics:
  1. 2 Elements will be needed. One element will be the attack element and the other is the Support or “Over Watch” element. All members of each element need to know their individual responsibilities. Both of these elements must keep a continuous coordination between each other to be successful.
  2. Prior to the assault, each assault member MUST know his entrance point into the adjective building.
  3. Bounding Over Watch – Suppressing Fire – When to move – Find your next cover before you move-COMMUNICATE!!! DON'T GET BOGGED DOWN!!!
  4. Combat Re-Loading – let your team know – LOADING!!..LOAD!!..UP!!
  5. Adapt to the situation – Stay flexible on options
  6. Once the objective building is reached, use CQB tactics to make entry and gain control of objective.
  7. Once objective is secured, Prepare Defensive positions to repel an enemy counter attack.

Re: MOUT Basics

Another idea for defense is channeling and slow down points.
To slow someone down, if they have to compete with complex obstacles to obtain a position, then their rate of movement slows to the point where you can pick off their lead elements as they pass the obstacles. Preferably this is done when approximately 60% or less of a squad size element or 50% of a fire team has passed the obstacle and are waiting for the rest of their team. Pick your moments and ambush the lead elements while they are not looking in your direction. Even if you miss, there is the bonus of having them off guard for a minute or two which provides you time to further exploit their already weak position.
Channeling is another method of slowing down the opposition. This involves FORCING the opposition to go through a certain "choke point" that is covered with overlapping heavy fields of fire. a basic "kill zone" that you can quickly engage and destroy key enemy supply lines, personnel and slow their advancement down to give the deeper defence more time to prepare for the assault.

I have also heard of using terms like "Red" for loading, and "Green" for ready to shoot as different variations. As long as everyone knows the terms being used.

ElectroMagneticPulse? hehe. Yeah, our team has a "code book" or list of brevity codes. Helps.

Re: MOUT Basics

Although I'm a fairly distinguished Marksman, I'd rather do EMP type weapons manipulations in person. I think it would be rather difficult to to explain in text.

If you would like to start a topic on it, I'd be more than happy to assist.

Re: MOUT Basics

Can't.
Got to go to AT for 2 weeks AND I got fired from my job today.
AT starts tomorrow so I don't think that I have a lot of time to commence typing.
I'll work on it when I get back though.
