Patrolling & Scouting

Cover and Concealment Defined:

a. Cover – The protection from the fire of hostile weapons – Paintball Guns
b. Concealment – The protection from observation or surveillance... NOT fromhostile fire.

Basic Principals:

  1. Remain motionless when observing
  2. Use all available concealment -- Always conduct yourself as if you were being watched.
  3. Observe from the PRONE position – A low silhouette makes detection difficult.
  4. Expose nothing that glistens – Reflection reveals location... Make sure your Mask has a Visor.
  5. Blend with your background – Contrasting colors are very noticeable.
  6. Stay in the shade – Moving shadows attract attention.
  7. Break up your regular outline – Ghilli or attach natural brush to your equipment.
  8. Keep away from the skyline or ridge lines
  9. Speak softly without whispering – whispering can be heard at a distance.
  10. Avoid delay by moving boldly and rapidly when firing is going on – take advantage of and all sounds to to rapidly push forward... noises such as firing distant or near, wind rustling leaves... etc.

Re: Patrolling & Scouting

Particularly for number 9, The "S" sound carries extremely well when whispered.

Also, addressing numbers 1 and 6, slow movements are preferable for scanning and looking around. (ie: slowly scan from side to side instead of whipping your head around and trying to view all of your angles quickly.

Re: Patrolling & Scouting

I remember doing #10 and it was very effective. Being a sniper on that mission, I only fire my marker when everybody is firing. This way, they were not able to locate my exact location. I was able slow down the reinforcement at the bridge and able to capture thier flag.

"Observe from the PRONE position – A low silhouette makes detection difficult."

Not enough people use this one. What a waste.

Re: Patrolling & Scouting

Also, a basic understanding of the eye's "wiring" is helpful. The human eye perceives motion better on its periphery instead of directly in front of it. You have a set of nerves that are responsible for vision and the set of nerves that are responsible for motion are located towards the "outsides" of the eyes. The set that are responsible for focus/acuity are located closer to the middle.

This is why a slow sweeping of the head might be favorable because as your periphery picks up movement you give your brain time to transition from the motion sensors to the acuity sensors and detect the object. A good example would be if you ever saw something moving out of the corner of your eye and whipped your head in that direction only to "lose" the source of movement.

This is very basic, but it gets the point across.

Re: Patrolling & Scouting

Also patience is the key when you are sniping people. You don't look for them, they will come to you.
