Re: A-5 Users doomed for woodsball?

The first speedball game I played was with my A-5.

The words "A-5" and "doomed" should not even be in the same sentence.

Re: A-5 Users doomed for woodsball?

I prefer the slower pace of woodsball, I have played speedball and it's alright but not for me.

I started in 1987, 20 years ago with woods/desert in Kingman/Bullhead City, AZ and have played woods ever since.

Re: A-5 Users doomed for woodsball?

I wonder why woodsball with almost zero sponsorship dollars and "inferior equipment" has become so popular that even the premiere speedball magazine Faceful now publishes a woodsball magazine called Jungle?

Could it be because speedball players (as a general rule) try to make you feel inferior and unwanted and woodsball players (as a general rule) are happy to have you join their game?

Keep your A-5. It is all the gun you will ever need. It's the man, not the machine that matters.

Re: A-5 Users doomed for woodsball?

Don't group people into speedball or woodsball categories. There are plenty of people who play both. Neither are superior or inferior. They can both be loads of fun.

First off it should not be a "general rule" that speedball players try to make you feel inferior. In fact at a lot of fields I've played at they're more than happy to have you join them unless they are in a serious practice. And actually come to think of it the field I played at had "woodsball" players that were always out of hand, swearing, and overly aggressive to other players because they "USED TO BE IN THE ARMY!". I'm not picking on either side, I'm just saying that there are two sides of the argument and it's much better (and easier) to categorize players as "nice" and "mean" as opposed to "speedball" and "woodsball".

As for Facefull getting the Jungle addition, it was only a matter of time. Paintball companies are getting bought up by bigger companies and the bigger companies/corporations have realized that they make their money in the recreational side of the sport. I'm predicting quite a change in the next 5 years when it comes to marketing and overall emphasis on the "types" of game play.

Now, I've read every Facefull front to back and every Jungle since it came out this past year and I have to say that I was appalled by the first editions of Jungle. The people who wrote in Jungle were downright mean to speedball players and overly judgmental, something that shouldn't happen in a magazine. Now, I will say that speedball PLAYERS can be more judgmental than the rest but speedball MAGAZINES are very open and never condescending when it comes to topics other than speedball. However, I cannot say this about the first editions of Jungle and still find a little heat every once in a while in the articles I read.

First off, let me acknowledge that you make some very valid points. Generalizations should be avoided for there are always many exceptions to them. Never the less though, they exist. A case in point would be the content which appalled you in Jungle. Mr. Laurent who runs Faceful is a very astute publisher. He knows that controversy sells magazines. Very often the press will create controversy where there is none solely for that purpose, to generate profit. In this case though, Mr. Laurent knows that it is enough to fan the flames of the generalization that already exist. Namely that you can't be a woodsball player an like speedball players or vice versa.

For those of us that play much though, we know this to be a fallacy. Speedball and woodsball and not mutually exclusive. We all know players who live in both worlds quite happily. Just as we have all seen rude behavior and foul mouths no matter which we chose to play.

I don't believe that it is a stretch of my imagination though to say that from the moment the NPPL stopped playing in the woods until very recent history, the players and businessmen who were the driving force behind speedball (and Mr. Laurent would be one) did everything in their power to distance them selves from and deny the existence of those of us who played in the woods. I find their recent forays back into the woods to be hypocritical at the least. For the companies I speak of have not been bought out by large corporations but rather are run by the same individuals who wished to deny us.

I am not one to hold a grudge though. Nor do I think it is beneficial for the house of paintball to be divided. I will on occasion though take the opportunity to remind them and everyone else that these people made a grave error in trying to ignore the roots of this great game.......lest they (or someone else) repeat the error.

There is room for all styles of play, everyone should be welcome to prove themselves on the field, and the man matters more than the gun.

I will say no more.
